In a historic milestone, the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council gathered in Kyiv on Monday, October 2nd, in a significant display of support for Ukraine. The meeting began with speeches by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmitry Kuleba, emphasizing their solidarity with Ukraine.

"We are convening this historic meeting of EU Foreign Ministers here in Ukraine, a candidate country and a future EU member. We are here to express our solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people," stated Josep Borrell on social media.

This event is unprecedented as the EU Foreign Affairs Council conducted its session outside the EU's borders but within Ukraine's future EU boundaries, highlighted Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba. He noted that this gathering itself sends a message of support from the EU to Ukraine.

Josep Borrell clarified that the meeting is informal and comprises "high-level political debates." While it won't lead to specific decisions or conclusions, it serves as a platform to discuss how to assist Ukraine and explore President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposed "Peace Formula."

One of the key topics of discussion at the EU Council meeting was Josep Borrell's proposal to commit to long-term financial support for Ukraine in terms of military aid. This includes support for the supply of modern fighter jets and missiles funded by the EU. Borrell had previously expressed his intention to mobilize five billion euros annually from 2024 to the end of 2027 for these purposes, as reported by DW.

The meeting underscores the EU's unwavering commitment to Ukraine and its future within the European Union.
